This side table pairs two of my favorite species—ash for the frame and figured walnut for the drawer front. The contrast between the light, open grain of ash and the deep, chocolatey figure of walnut gives the piece a quiet visual tension that makes it more interesting the longer you look at it.
The legs taper on two faces, cut on the jointer and refined with a hand plane. The drawer front features a hand-shaped pull carved directly from the walnut—no hardware. Mortise and tenon joints throughout ensure this piece holds together for generations. The oil finish enhances both species without obscuring their natural character.
