This commission started with a client who wanted a coffee table that felt both modern and timeless—something Scandinavian in spirit but with real heft and presence. The answer was a single plank of hard maple, thick enough to carve the round top from and leave material for three substantial legs.

The base is where this piece gets interesting. Three square legs intersect at the center through three-way cross halving joints—a joint that locks in all three directions without any hardware. No screws, no bolts, no metal of any kind. The entire table is 100% solid wood. The top was rough-cut on the bandsaw, then shaped on the router table for a clean, consistent edge.

The finish is a hand-rubbed oil that brings out the natural figure in the maple without building up a plastic film. It deepens the grain and gives the surface a warm, tactile quality that invites you to run your hand across it.
